Kidnappers of Bamigbetan, Lagos LG boss demand $1m ransom

The suspected kidnappers of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area Chairman, Kehinde Bamigbetan, are demanding $1 million (about N158 million) as ransom. A top state government official disclosed to journalists, when she visited the home of the victim yesterday that the kidnappers wanted the ransom paid before they would release the Ejigbo council boss.

Though, she stated that negotiation with the suspected kidnappers was still ongoing, the state government would soon make an official statement on the unfortunate incident. She said the news of the kidnap was shocking, adding that it was the reason she came to the victim’s family. She also said she hoped that the matter would be resolved on time, so that both the victim and the family would live their normal lives . “To me the news of the kidnap is shocking. It has never happened in Lagos State before.

The suspected kidnappers are demanding for one million dollars before they will set him free,” she added. On his part, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ademorin Kuye stated that the state government would not condone any act that would put the state into chaos, given the present security challenges in the country. Former commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dele Alake, who drove into the victim’s residence at about 10.30am said, “I am shocked beyond words” before he disappeared into the green coloured one storey building at Mimo Street, Ejigbo.

The Chairman, Somolu Local Government, who came to Bamigbetan’s residence in company of his Mushin counterpart, Gbolahan Bagostowe and Tunde Adepitan both said words could not describe how they felt. Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Damasus Ozoani told Daily Sun that efforts were on to unravel the circumstance surrounding Monday night kidnap. “The police are investigating. We do not want to do our investigations on the pages of the papers so that it will not jeopardise our investigation,” he added.

On how Bamigbetan was kidnapped, Ozoani explained that information they received showed that the local government boss was kidnapped around 11:00pm. “We do not have the identity of the kidnappers and the driver of the vehicle took to his heel,” he added. However, a mild drama played itself out at the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, when visitors and those who had gone to the council to do business were turned back by two receptionists at the front desk.

They alleged that they had been directed to turn back any body that comes to the council Former Chief Press Secretary to former governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu and incumbent Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Kehinde Oladapo Bamigbetan was Monday night abducted by unknown gunmen at Ejigbo in Lagos.
